Supporting Better Idea Transfer = Communication

When we communicate ideas to each other, we want them to be ...
  • Meaningful (understandable)
  • Memorable (unforgettable)
  • Noteworthy (important)

We want others to say things like ...
  • "I know what you are talking about."
  • "Yeah, I remember what you said two years ago on this topic"
  • "Wow, I am so glad you told me about this!"

As opposed to ...
  • "I have no idea what you're talking about"
  • "I'm sorry, did you say something?"
  • "And why did you just waste my time?"

(Found 'noteworthy' via a search on 'importance' at Wordnet)

The PUB View - The Ultimate General Context

April 28, 2008

While conversing with Scott about world views, we first discussed the feeders of how we "Identify Reality":

(:-) Source --->  Book
  • Interaction     }
  • Information    }       --->   Recipient  (-:)
  • Inference       }
This didn't connect.

Then we discussed the PUB View of the Reality. This one clicked!

I mentioned that one of the powers and values of CLiC Pictures is that they can provide conceptual context much like how maps provide geographical context.
If we think of the progression of drilling in ...
  1. A map of the Milky Way galaxy
  2. A map of our Solar System
  3. A map of the Earth, or a globe
  4. A map of our continent, North America
  5. A map of the U.S.A.
  6. A map of your state
  7. A map of your county
  8. A map of your city
  9. A map of your neighborhood
  10. A map of your house
or ...
  1. A view of the Earth
  2. A map of our country
  3. A map of our region
  4. A map of our city

I should have mentioned the PUB View first, which then puts the 3 I's of Identifying/Discovering Reality in context (who knew?), which then also is a clean lead into the argument that training ourselves to infer or reason using logic is a foundational and central skill that we all need.

Vitruvius Gets Around

Vitruvius, the roman architect born c. 80–70 BC and died after c. 15 BC, identified three essential attributes of a building which are relevant to any item that we deal with.

A structure must exhibit the three qualities of
  • firmitas, strong or durable
  • utilitas, useful
  • venustas, beautiful

Or as I like to say ...
  • Firm
  • Functional
  • Friendly
I did not know that the famous picture of the man in the circle created by Leonardo da Vinci was called the Vitruvian Man

Insights are life

We live and die by our insights.

CLiCs help us gather, discuss, and apply our insights.

or

CLiCs help us combine and use our insights.

or

CLiC Pictures help us seek and share insight.

Building your life ...

Just As A Builder Uses Specific Tools and Materials To Construct A House and a Home . . .

You Can Discover The Tools and Materials You Need To Build Your Life

When building a house ...
  • You can hire professionals to build the home
  • The professionals use invaluable tools to create the home
  • You can buy quality materials that go into the home

When building your life ...
  • You are the 'professional builder'
  • You need to discover and learn the tools to use
  • You can't buy quality materials. You need to make them 'by hand'.

CLiCs stands for Central Life Concepts

CLiCs are ...
  • the fundamental items, influences, and interactions
  • that you must master
  • to build your life.

Quote is from the Build A Life website.

Clips for Ideas

A CLiP, or a CLiC Picture, enables you to clip ideas together. Hanging ideas 'up' either in your thoughts or visibly on paper or a screen. As a paper clip holds papers together, an idea CLiP helps you connect relevant ideas together when you listen and learn, or speak and teach.

Examples of clips

Holding devices

paper clip
binder clip (black and holds papers more strongly)

money clip
chip clip

ammunition clip
belt clip (for phones, pagers, etc.)

roach clip
crocodile clip

Cutouts or segments

clip art
video clip
media clip

Operation Essentials - The Operational 3 R's

From a conversation in the Fall of 2006 ...

Here are three very valuable rules of thumb when it comes to Operations like households, or business, or governments or ...

1) Roles
2) Rules
3) Routine

LEGOs for Living Life

CLiCs are Conceptual Life Components. You can think of them as LEGOs for Living Life.  And there are only 16 of them. Once you get the hang of these 16 you can build just about anything in your life (or at least represent it. Just as LEGO bricks can be used to build and represent just about any real building.)

The Doing is More Important than The Saying

I often wrestle too much over capturing an idea with the right phrase or the right words. Like ...

"Do it now"
"Just Do It"

"Get 'r done"
"Finish the Job"

"Pick your battles"
"Select your mountains"

But as I was just chatting with my wife, often times ...

'the doing' is more important than 'the saying'.

'The doing' is useful now.
'The saying' is useful for the future and for others. But I digress.

Composing a Life

University Lecture Series: Journeys

In an essay called "Composing a Life", Mary Catherine Bateson, who wrote a book of the same name, writes,

"An artist takes ingredients that may seem incompatible, and organizes them into a whole that is not only workable, but finally pleasing and true, even beautiful. As you get up in the morning, as you make decisions, as you spend money, make friends, make commitments, you are creating a piece of art called your life…"

"Music is an art in which you create something that happens over time, that goes through various transitions over time. Looking at your life in this way, you have to look at the change that occurs within a lifetime – discontinuities, transitions, and growth of various sorts – and the artistic unity, like that of a symphony with very different movements, that can characterize a life…" .

...

If life is painting a painting or composing music, then CLiCs identify the fundamental media which we must become thoroughly skilled in working with.

Classical Definition of Knowledge

Know the parts ... of a water cooler

Axiom
To be effective in any endeavor, you must know how the parts fit and work together.

Real Life
When wrestling with our new office water cooler, I kept trying to lift the drip tray up and out, only to eventually find that you must pull it out horizontally. The axiom is proven again.

What ROY G BIV is to rainbows ...

What ROY G BIV is to rainbows and the world of art,
so CLiCs are to information and the world of life.

Prioritize, Collect, and Organize

CLiC Pictures are a powerful way to prioritize, collect, and organize the information and insights you need. When skimming subscriptions, whether magazines, or emails, or whatever the source, having CLiCs in mind makes you more effective.

CLiC Pictures are ...
  • a thinking tool
  • a communication tool
  • an action tool

Fundamental Building Blocks

CLiC Pictures present and apply the 16 fundamental building blocks of living a satisfying life.

Just as we give our children blocks to play with so that they learn how blocks, balls, and ramps fundamentally interact, so we need to know the 16 fundamental building blocks of life. The big difference is, we move on from playing with our wooden blocks, but we never move on from learning more and more about how to successfully relate to the building blocks of life.
